Two Oscars and two Golden Globes: Hilary Swank has won Hollywood’s most important awards. During this year’s BAMBI award ceremony in Berlin on 12 November she will be receiving the BAMBI for “International Actress”.
Her award-winning roles in “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby” showcased her immense talent and led to her major breakthrough as a highly respected actress. The women played by Hilary Swank often have a kind of supernatural energy. They are born fighters like the main character in “You’re Not You”, her latest movie. Swank plays a woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (A.L.S.), who struggles to be treated as an ordinary woman despite her condition. The progressive ailment, that affects nerve cells in the brain, attracted the attention of the German public when the painter Jörg Immendorff, who suffered from A.L.S., died in 2007.
The BAMBI-jury explains: „Hilary Swank’s biggest talent is her transparency; she grants insight into the souls of the women she plays. In the movie ‘You’re Not You’ Swank plays a gifted concert pianist who is hit by a fateful blow, an incurable illness. Like in an open book, Swank allows us to read her feelings, torn between resignation and rebellion. She is dependent on aid, but does not like to be helped. Eventually, she develops a wonderful friendship with her unconventional caregiver, played by Emmy Rossum. As usual, Hilary Swank plays a very delicate woman with a strong will who is a determined fighter. She has the ability to make us laugh and cry the very next moment. Hilary Swank knows how to express strong feelings without overacting.”
BAMBI, Germany’s most important media award and one of the biggest social events of the year, takes place in Berlin on 12 November 2015. Television channel “Das Erste” will broadcast the show live from the Theater am Potsdamer Platz at 20:15.
