2018 SCAD Savannah Commencement

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) welcomed two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank to address SCAD’s largest graduating class on Friday, June 1.

“The world got to know Hilary Swank through her Academy Award-winning roles that touched our souls and lifted our spirits,” said SCAD Founder and President Paula Wallace, “but it’s her multifaceted career – that has expanded into producing and entrepreneurship – that makes her an ideal role model for our multi-talented graduates of the Class of 2018.”

Swank addressed graduates at two ceremonies, one at 9 a.m. and one at 2 p.m., and received an honorary doctorate of humane letters before telling graduates, “Make a choice. Make it happen…All that matters is that you make choices every single day to work toward your dream.” She went on to say, “Don’t worry about how fast or slow you’re going compared to others. Speed doesn’t matter. It’s how present you are in each moment that matters…Any path you choose will likely be long and full of ups and downs, so choose the one that brings you the most joy and makes you feel most alive. And then pursue that goal with all the grit, passion and determination you can muster.”

Swank’s career as an actress, producer, and fashion designer resonates with the more than 100 degree programs offered at SCAD, including film and television, cinema studies, fashion, and luxury fashion and management.
