MERYL STREEP AND HILARY SWANK TO JOIN TOMMY LEE JONES IN ‘THE HOMESMAN’?

It would appear as though the 2013 awards season already has a major player in ‘The Homesman,’ and the picture hasn’t even begun shooting yet. The film, set to be written and directed by Tommy Lee Jones (who also plans to star), is an American frontier drama with a handful of meaty roles. Today, we may know who will occupy a couple of those meaty roles: Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank. (Jones won an Oscar too, so we’re talking lots of potential “Academy Award Winner…” titles on ‘The Homesman’s’ poster.)

The Wrap claims a source close to the project has indicated the names of both leading ladies have been included in a package being presented to buyers in advance of the American Film Market (which kicks off in about a month). The project was announced back in May, with Jones’ Javelina Film Company producing. This will be the man’s fourth stint in the director’s chair, following the 1995 TNT telepic ‘The Good Old Boys’, 2005′s ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’ and last year’s HBO original movie ‘The Sunset Limited.’

‘The Homesman’ will see Jones playing a “claim-jumping rascal of a man who ushers three insane women on an odyssey from Nebraska to Iowa, braving the elements along the way.” He is joined on the journey by a frontier woman, whom Swank will play if she indeed signs on.

It’s unclear what character Streep would take on, but perhaps it’s safe to assume she’ll be one of the insane women being transported. Ms. Streep and Mr. Jones appeared together on screen this past summer in the dramedy ‘Hope Springs.’

Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank Take On ‘The Homesman’ With Tommy Lee Jones

Are Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank joining Tommy Lee Jones on the American prairie?

With the American Film Market just around the corner, a number of pre-sales projects have begun to circulate among buyers, including “The Homesman” with Streep and Swank part of the package, TheWrap has learned.

In May it was announced that Jones would write, direct, produce and star in the period piece, which follows a pioneer, played by Jones, and a frontier woman as they escort three insane women across the American prairie.

No additional cast was announced at that time. Now an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap that buyers are being presented with a pre-AFM package that includes the two A -list actresses. Continue reading Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank Take On ‘The Homesman’ With Tommy Lee Jones

Wolfe to helm Swank in ‘You’re Not You’

George C. Wolfe has come on board to direct Hilary Swank in “You’re Not You,” with production starting in Los Angeles in early November.
Drama is about a woman (to be portrayed by Swank) suffering from a fatal illness, and an aimless young woman who enters her life as a caregiver.

Swank is producing through her 2S banner with co-founder Molly Smith along with Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan. Alcon Entertainment is investing in the project.

Smith told Variety that the producers are currently casting young actresses for the 23-year-old caregiver role. Story, based on the first novel by Michelle Wildgen, has been adapted first by Shana Feste (“Country Strong”) and then by Jordan Roberts, who polished Alcon’s “Dolphin Tale.”

Smith and Swank have been developing “You’re Not You” for several years through 2S. “Something Borrowed,” released last year through Warner Bros., was the banner’s first produced project.

Wolfe won Tonys for directing “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” and “Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk.” He also directed romancer “Nights in Rodanthe” for Di Novi in 2008.
