Two-time Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank goes one-on-one with Walter Scott.
WS You’ve played many tough-but-vulnerable characters, as in Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby. What do you look for in a part?
HS I like to play women who blaze trails. From Alice Paul, one of the original suffragettes, to Amelia Earhart. It’s a blessing to step into their shoes.
WS Does Mom approve of all your roles?
HS Her only request is, “Can you please live to see the credits once in a while?”–because I tend to die in all my movies.
WS Even in your next one?
HS No. My next, Betty Anne Waters, is a true story about the love between a brother and a sister. The brother is convicted of murder and can’t afford a lawyer, so Betty Anne, a high school dropout, gets her GED and goes to college and law school to try to get him off death row.
