HBO TV movie starring Hilary Swank to briefly film in area this summer

An HBO TV movie that will follow two women who form a unique bond while fighting to eradicate malaria will film in Wilmington this summer, according to local film industry officials.

“Mary and Martha,” is directed by Phillip Noyce. Noyce also helmed the pilot of ABC Studios’ series “Revenge,” which filmed in the area, including Southport and Oak Island in Brusnwick County, and directed “Salt,” a feature starring Angelina Jolie.

The production is currently filming in Africa. Wilmington will stand in as Washington, D.C., Wilmington Regional Film Commission director Johnny Griffin said Tuesday.

The film’s officials have rented an office building near Dawson Street used by recent production “Jessabelle.” The project is expected to film in the region for about a week, Griffin said.

Hilary Swank will star alongside Brenda Blethyn in “Mary and Martha, according to Variety magazine.

It was unclear Tuesday whether the pair will be filming scenes in town. Neither actress has filmed in the area before, according to the StarNews Media’s “Wilm On Film” production guide.
