Tagline: “There’s more to life than being a passenger.”
Translation: That’s right, there’s also Oscar gold in them thar hills!
The Verdict: After Hilary Swank captured her second Academy Award for Million Dollar Baby back in 2005, she did what most other pre-recession Oscar winners attempted to do: try to cash in and land herself few big paydays! However, after taking mildly successful stabs at the rom-com and horror genres (P.S. I Love You and The Reaping, respectively), she paired up with the widely respected director Mira Nair to shoot a biopic about the legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart. As we’ve come to expect from Nair, the film looks as if it will be visually sumptuous; the trailer for the film is filled with lush shots of old biplanes skirting across exotic landscapes. And Fox Searchlight is clearly positioning this as 2010 Oscar bait, as the film will be opening in limited release on October 23, which means that we already have one strong media angle secured for next year’s Oscar race. Namely, will this be the film that propels Hilary Swank to overtake Meryl Streep as the most decorated actress of our time?
